Our Experience

My wife and I have demonstrated our fire starters at gun shows and outdoor trade shows for seven years — a minimum of 40 shows a year and at least 50 demonstrations a day each. Between the two of us that is more than 28,000 live fire-starting demonstrations.

The Fire-Fast Trekker has been the official fire starter on Naked & Afraid for the past 1.5 years (as of June 2026) and has been used on five continents in both wet and dry conditions. The Great Ape Empire (a Canadian veterans group) has also wholesaled our fire starters for years. We test every design to extremes and stand behind the results.

What Every Fire-Fast Shares

• Austrian ferrocerium rod (76% rare-earth metals) that produces a large volume of hot sparks with normal pressure
• 96% pure magnesium rod that scrapes easily into usable tinder in 10–15 seconds
• Hardwood handle (primarily African Padauk) — high natural resin content makes it essentially waterproof; can be scraped for emergency tinder as a last resort
• High-carbon tempered steel striker attached with 550 paracord so it cannot be lost
• All models throw the same quality of sparks and work when wet
• Hand-made by my wife and me in Florida

Longevity note: We fully wear-tested a FireFly years ago until the ferro rod was completely consumed — it delivered 2,200 strikes. The larger models contain substantially more ferrocerium material and are therefore expected to last significantly longer. A full wear-out test on the Trekker is currently underway.

Trekker - Survival

5 oz | 6⅜" overall | 20" paracord

Our flagship and most popular model. The longest and widest ferro rod in the lineup. It throws the greatest volume of sparks per stroke, requires the least physical strength, and is the easiest for women, children, and beginners. Once the simple technique is learned, a one-strike fire is realistic for many people. Lasts the longest of the lineup because it has the greatest volume of ferrocerium. Choose this when reliability and ease of use matter more than ounces.

Kamper Lanyard – Camping

3 oz | ≈ 5¾" overall | 40" paracord

The mid-size option designed for camping and everyday outdoor use. Still very easy to use and produces strong sparks, but lighter and more compact than the Trekker. The long lanyard means you can wear it around your neck so that if you lose your pack, the fire starter stays with you.

Boy Scout Note We regularly hear from Scout leaders and parents that the Kamper is a favorite on camping trips. It is easy enough for the scouts themselves to use successfully when earning their fire-starting requirements, and tough enough to stand up to repeated group use by 10 or more kids on a single outing.

FireFly – Backpacking / Mountaineering

1.8 oz | ≈ 5–5¼" overall | 16" paracord

Built for people who refuse to carry more than 2 oz. Still throws the same quality sparks although in lower volume because the flint is smaller - but is still easier to use than most generic ferro rods. Not the first choice for women or children who need maximum spark volume with minimum effort. The handle is too small to serve as meaningful emergency tinder. We personally tested a FireFly to complete wear-out at 2,200 strikes.

FireFly Mini – Ultralight

1.5 oz | 4¼" overall | 16" paracord

The most compact version of the FireFly. Same performance in an even smaller package for those counting every fraction of an ounce and every inch of space. Same limitations as the standard FireFly regarding ease of use. Based on the same ferro rod as the FireFly (tested to 2,200 strikes).

Trekker Tracker - Survival + Navigation & Tools

7.5 oz | ≈ 7" overall

Same core as the Trekker, plus three practical additions:

• Shock-proof compass (buried below the rim of the handle for protection — the only brand that survived 24 hours in a gem tumbler in our testing)
• 13 feet of 1,000 lb Titan SurvivorCord (15-strand core containing Kevlar, fishing line, jute tinder, and 12 nylon strands)

The Whistle A genuine American Whistle Corporation emergency whistle with a pea. It produces a loud, piercing tone. Far more effective and less exhausting than yelling if you become separated from your group, need to attract a rescuer, or want to discourage a wild animal. Your voice stays intact so you can still talk when help gets close.
